Summary of the Program
The Clean Leadership program (formerly Nova Scotia Youth Conservation Corps or Youth Corps) was established in 1989 to provide youth with training and employment opportunities in the environmental field. This program engages community partners across the province to hire youth to carry out work in the summer months that fosters environmental stewardship. The Clean Leadership program provides youth with clean sector work experience; an enhanced appreciation of the environment and their community, with opportunity to give back; skills for life-long learning (including job-readiness and leadership skills); and knowledge for future employment and/or education ventures. Interns will benefit from experiential work experience, a professional development training and leadership conference, networking opportunities and new connections.

Summary of Position
The community partner for this Summer Student Intern position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq, reporting to the Climate and Agriculture Projects. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for carrying out important outreach, education, and fieldwork activities to support climate monitoring, agriculture, and land stewardship activities. Activities will include creating outreach material to engage the public on topics related to climate change, assisting with field surveys and data collection, visiting communities to assist with meetings/events, as well as installing and maintaining research and apiculture equipment. The successful candidate needs to have great communication skills, a passion for learning, a love of the natural world, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks.
Community Partner
The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (The CMM) is a Tribal Council representing eight Mi’kmaq communities of mainland Nova Scotia. Our mission is to proactively promote and assist Mi’kmaq communities’ initiatives towards self-determination and enhancement of community. This internship will be housed within CMM’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources, specifically under the Climate and Agriculture Projects. The CMM is located in the Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community in Nova Scotia and has over 100 Employees.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Collecting and organizing data
- Carrying out informative community engagement events
- Engaging community youth as part of CMM’s annual MCG Days
- Carrying out independent literature research
- Assist with CMM’s agriculture work, including beekeeping and greenhouse work
- Interpreting maps and satellite imagery
Requirements/Qualifications
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted Refugee Status, or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must be a full-time student* and intending to return to school in Fall 2022;
- *Note: Indigenous, Black and/or African Nova Scotian youth between 18-30 years of age do not need to be current students to be eligible.
- Must not be an immediate family member of community partner;
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Experience working in or with First Nation communities is considered an asset;
- Excellent presentation and communication skills;
- Experience conducting field work is considered an asset;
- Understanding of local issues related to climate change;
- Must have reliable transportation to the CMM office.
Working Conditions
This will be an office-based position with regular field work and community outreach activities. Applicants must be willing to work in outdoor environments in various weather conditions. Work may occasionally take place on or near boats.
Physical Requirements
Field days are a component of this internship. Successful applicants should have ability to complete full field days in various weather conditions.
