Job Title: Energy Projects Intern 

Reports to: Climate Change and Energy Program Manager 

Job Location: 493 Main Street, Mahone Bay, NS 

Wage: $17.00 / hour 

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship) 

Start Date: Expected May 15, 2023

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

The Town of Mahone Bay is a small coastal Town located on the South Shore of Nova Scotia with a population of approximately 1,100 people. The Town owns and operates its own Municipal electric utility which offers unique opportunities for renewable energy generation and electric home heating solutions. In March 2021, the Town approved an ambitious Greenhouse Gas Reduction Action Plan, and Environmental Leadership is one of three pillars of the Town Council’s 2021-25 Strategic Plan. This will ensure that climate change mitigation and adaptation remain a priority for the Town. 

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Town of Mahone Bay. The intern will report to the Climate and Energy Program Manager and the Town CAO. In this position, the intern will be responsible for community education and engagement efforts in Mahone Bay to do with our energy projects including the solar garden, wind farm, GHG Reduction Action Plan, HOME program and EV CarShare study. The intern will use techniques including door-to-door canvassing, community workshops and online surveys. The intern will work closely with Town staff to plan and implement outreach initiatives. The successful candidate needs to have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and strong communication skills. 

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Serve as a front-line advocate that engages with residents on energy projects.  
  • Communicate energy issues in understandable and engaging ways in one-on-one or group settings.  
  • Effectively represent the Town by displaying professionalism and customer service skills.  
  • Conduct community outreach including door-to-door canvassing in town.  
  • Help plan and execute community campaigns and events.  
  • Engage community stakeholders to promote energy efficiency programs and increase awareness and adoption of these programs.  
  • Support communications including online communications channels and social media.  
  • Work closely with Town staff to develop renewable energy content for factsheets, brochures, posters, web pages, and social media platforms.  
  • Perform related duties as required. 

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
  • Quality-consciousness and exceptional attention to detail 
  • Demonstrated understanding of energy and climate issues in the context of local government 
  • Strong active listening and communication skills 
  • Experience with online communications channels and social media 
  • Community engagement, organizing, canvasing or issue-campaign experience is a plus 
  • Experience in renewable energy, energy efficiency, or a related field would be considered an asset 

Working Conditions
The successful candidate will work out of the Town of Mahone Bay Town Hall office located at 493 Main Street, Mahone Bay. There will be interactions with the public during door-to-door canvassing and during public workshops, but it will not be an everyday occurrence. 

Physical Requirements
The successful candidate may be required to walk throughout the community for data collection and may be required to stand/walk for a few hours occasionally throughout the day.
