Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

Atlantic Water Network (AWN), a project of the MakeWay Shared Platform, is Atlantic Canada’s hub for community-based water monitoring. For nearly two decades, AWN has supported a 

growing network of over one-hundred community partner organizations throughout Atlantic 

Canada in all aspects of water quality monitoring. AWN achieves this by creating shared learning opportunities, offering tailored technical supports, and promoting local water priorities at both regional and national scales. AWN works throughout all Atlantic provinces with a main office at 6080 Young Street, Halifax. 

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program 

will be Atlantic Water Network (AWN), a project on the MakeWay Shared Platform. In this 

position, you will be responsible for managing AWN’s Halifax freshwater monitoring equipment 

bank, where communities across Nova Scotia can loan water monitoring equipment free of 

charge. You will also be responsible for training community members on safe equipment use 

and proper water monitoring protocols. The successful candidate needs to have strong technical and communication skills as well as a passion for community-driven environmental change. 

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Manage Atlantic Water Network’s Halifax freshwater equipment bank. This includes: 
    • maintaining and calibrating water monitoring equipment
    • scheduling equipment loans, calibrations, and exchanges with community partners
    • maintaining professional relationships with 20-30 Nova Scotia-based communitypartner organizations who use AWN’s equipment bank and resources
    • managing relationships with coordinators of AWN’s regional equipment hubs throughout the Maritime Provinces 
  • Develop and implement a summer equipment training strategy. This includes:
    • Analyzing the needs of our current network and developing a training strategy
    • Developing in-field training opportunities for equipment bank users
    • Developing online and printed resources to aid equipment users 
  • Develop communication material to showcase the equipment bank and its users. This includes:
    • Bi-weekly social media engagement
    • Reporting and presenting on successes and improvements if needed 
  • Attend and assist with a choice of virtual or in-person outreach events (at a minimum, monthly) throughout the summer that are run by community environmental organizations, such as water quality monitoring runs, BioBlitzes, and workshops 

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
  •  Coursework in science, including environmental science, ecology, or geography; 
  • Adept in both teamwork and working independently; 
  • Strong communication and outreach skills with experience communicating difficult scientific concepts to lay audiences;
  • Experience with environmental monitoring will be considered an asset 
  • Willingness to travel (if travel is permitted) 

Working Conditions
This position will require working with the public from both our office in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 

and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The intern must be available to work in-person for three days per week, with options for remote work available otherwise. Willingness to travel within the province and to other Maritime provinces is an asset, should travel be permitted. 

Physical Requirements
The position will require frequent standing and working with small pieces of equipment.
