Job Title: Waste Reduction Services Intern

Reports to: Ciera Robinson, Waste Services and Compliance Officer  

Job location: 1306 Georgefield Rd, Georgefield  

Wage: $17.20/hour

Hours: 35 Hours per week (15- week internship)   

Start Date: Expected May 20, 2025

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects. 

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

Summary of Position: 

The Waste Reduction Intern will provide support to the Solid Waste Division through various waste reduction activities and clean-up efforts. This position will report to the Waste Services and Compliance Officer and will be responsible for conducting curbside waste audits, collecting & compiling data, and assisting in illegal dumpsite investigations & clean-ups. The position will be based out of the East Hants Waste Management Centre, where the intern will provide various support on tasks such as providing education material to the public, assisting in the onsite environmental monitoring program and conducting onsite and roadside litter clean-ups. The position will spend the majority of their time conducting work in the field with some in-office work required. The successful applicant needs to be independent, well organized and comfortable conducting work outdoors and at waste management facilities. A valid class 5 drivers license is required. Experience driving a pick-up truck is considered an asset.     

Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Conduct Curbside Waste Audits- Observe waste, recycling and organics placed curbside for collection and report all findings 
  • Data Collection & Compilation- Gather data during curbside waste audits and provide to the Waste Services and Compliance Officer for review  
  • Assist the Waste Services and Compliance Officer in conducting illegal dumpsite investigations and small clean-ups.   
  • Support the Waste Services and Compliance Officer in preparing and delivering solid waste education packages to the public and businesses.  
  • Provide support to the Waste Management Centre- work may include providing education on our solid waste programs to residents on site, assisting with the on-site environmental monitoring program and conducting litter clean-ups 
  • Conduct litter clean-ups along approved roadways & municipal business parks  
  • Event Participation-  Provide education on solid waste programs and services at community events (booth style set-up)  

Requirements/Qualifications:  

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment. 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback. 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset.   
  • Experience with MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel. 
  • The candidate needs to have a valid drivers’ license and access to a vehicle.  
  • Experience driving a work vehicle is considered an asset.  

Working Conditions:  

  • The majority of work will be conducted outdoors and at waste management facilities (noise/odors).  
  • Office environment provided for office work (data entry, daily task tracking, etc.)   

Physical requirements:  

  • The position requires frequent walking and ability to lift 50 lbs.
