Wage: $17.50 / hour 

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

 About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

 Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

 About the host employer 

Hike Nova Scotia is a non-profit organization that encourages and promotes a growing hiking culture throughout our great province. We strive to be the voice for those who hike, walk and snowshoe as well as those who build and maintain hiking trails. Based out of Halifax, there is no public access office for Hike NS. All employees work remotely from their home offices and meet in person regularly. 

 Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Hike Nova Scotia. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for supporting the work of Hike NS and its various projects. The successful candidate has a passion for walking, hiking and the outdoors in general; enjoys a collaborative work environment; and excels at self-directed work, but also shines in team settings. Hike NS is a dynamic and growing organization. We would love to have a Project Officer help us grow the organization even further with their fresh ideas and skills in communications and project management. The Project Officer will be required to work remotely from their own home office and will take direction from and report to the Executive Director. 

 Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Support Hike NS in communication planning as well as developing communication tools and visuals for use in social media, traditional media, online (website) and in the community 
  • Assist in administration of Hike NS membership management 
  • Assist in coordinating the Hiker Challenge and work with partners in developing new badges 
  • Conduct preparations for the Fall Guided Hike & Walk series  
  • Assist with coordination of the Trail Builders Network  
  • Schedule Leave No Trace (LNT) workshops and courses, correspond with course instructors (Leave No Trace is an approach to being outdoors in a low-impact way to conserve and protect our natural environment) 
  • Lead LNT awareness workshops (will receive training May 27-28) 
  • Update an existing Leave No Trace social media campaign 
  • Staff pop up displays at events (such as outdoor events, at parks, etc.) 
  • Assist in planning and implementation of the Hiking Summit (annual conference) 
  • Supervise Hiking Summit volunteers onsite at the event (June 2-4) 

 Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of project management (planning, implementation and evaluation) 
  • Experience in communications planning and developing communications tools
  • Experience in digital marketing
  • Experience in use of website content management systems an asset 
  • Experience in and knowledge of volunteer management 
  • Experienced in public speaking and delivering educational experiences 
  • Has a passion for the outdoors
  • Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team 
  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector and experience in working within it an asset 

 Working Conditions  

The Project Officer will be required to work remotely from their own home office (require their own basic remote office equipment and technology). Must attend regular in-person meetings with co-workers as well as meet with partners and attend community events. Some outdoor events will be required. Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must have a valid driver’s license.
