About the host employer

Sherbrooke Restoration Commission is responsible for the operation and management of Sherbrooke Village – Nova Scotia’s largest living history museum. Sherbrooke Village depicts a typical Nova Scotian village of the 1860-1880 period. Its interpretive program explores local, provincial and national topics that framed 19th century rural life and living in addition to Nova Scotia’s role in nation-building at the time of Canada’s confederation.

Built on an economy of ship building, lumbering and gold mining, Sherbrooke Village reflects Nova Scotia as it was during its industrial boom of the 1860s with an emphasis on traditional trades, skills and domestic craft demonstrations of the period. Skilled staff artisans practice weaving, pottery, woodturning, blacksmithing, type printing, and ambrotype photography, with plans to introduce authentic Indigenous artisans in development. It is the largest Nova Scotia Museum site with approximately 80 buildings, over 25 of those restored and open to the public, of which most are occupied by costumed interpreters who engage visitors in various aspects of the Village interpretive program. Sherbrooke Village is open to the public May through September with a weekly thematic program and corresponding events. Visiting artists, musicians and performers contribute to its activity offerings. The Village also hosts events throughout the season presented by local community organizations, not-for-profits and charities. As the anchor tourism destination on the Eastern Shore, Sherbrooke Village is actively cultivating partnerships to support regional tourism development.
