Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
I Heart Bikes provides bike rentals, slushies and guided tours on the Halifax Waterfront. We have been operating for over 12 years and focus on promoting cycling as a means transportation for seeing and experience Halifax and the surrounding area. We have a range of bike rentals, including a fleet of ebikes, hybrid bikes, touring bikes, trail bikes and more. Our customers range from locals looking to test and ebike to more experience cyclists biking the Cabot Trail. We aim to educate on the public on the variety of cycling experience available in Halifax & Nova Scotia and provide a variety of resources including digital and virtual maps.
The primary location for I Heart Bikes if 1507 Lower Water Street, Halifax, NS B3J 0E2. Please note this is not an official civic address as the boardwalk businesses do not have an official civic address due to their location on the boardwalk.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be I Heart Bikes. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for the successful fulfillment of bike rental orders and reservations from start to finish in a way that maximizes client satisfaction while creating a diverse, team-oriented, safe, and supportive environment for all youth and the proper care of our bike inventory and day-to-day store operations on the very busy Halifax Boardwalk. A typical day includes educating the public on the bicycle rental options available and the potential activities they may complete by bike as well as the ongoing maintenance of our bicycle rental fleet. The successful candidate needs to have an interest in bicycles, sustainability, an interest in developing their hands-on bike maintenance skills, and a passion for exploring Halifax and the surrounding area by bike.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Fulfill bike rental reservations and orders
- Open store and properly set-up for the day
- Close store and properly store equipment for use next day
- Ensure all rental equipment is returned and in adherence to the rental agreement
- Greet and assist customers
Tasks:
- Fit customers to bikes & instruct on proper care and use
- Fit customers to helmets
- Clean bikes after each use and as needed
- Check bikes before and after each use
- Check & fill tire pressure
- Performance maintenance as needed with emphasis on cleaning and greasing chains
- Complete rental agreements
- Advise customers on rental route recommendations and use of interactive maps
- Prep daily reservations
- Serve slushies
- Clean, refill, and maintain slushie machines
- Keep store clean & tidy
- Perform daily operational tasks as needed
- Book customers for rentals
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Proficiency in English both written and oral
- French or another spoken language is considered an asset
- Interest in bike maintenance and bicycling; bike maintenance experience will be considered a plus
- Proponent must successfully complete a 30 day on-the-job bike maintenance training program
- Enjoy working outdoors in a fast paced environment; prepared to work in a variety of outdoor conditions included heat, rain and more cold temperatures on the shoulder season (May & October)

Physical Requirements
This job is considered to be physical demanding as the intern(s) will be required to lift bikes on a regular basis and perform physical tasks such as cleaning and maintaining bikes in an outdoor environment.
