Reports to: Amanda Doucette, Atlantic Water Network Communications Specialist. 

Job location: Remote-work with occasional in-person work in Nova Scotia. 

Wage: $18.50 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship) 

Start Date: Expected May 15, 2023

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

 

Program Requirements 

• Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
• Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
• From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
• Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

 

About the host employer 

Atlantic Water Network (AWN) is a hub for community-based water monitoring in Atlantic 

Canada. For over 15 years we have worked to gain trust among community partners and have 

collaborated with countless local and regional organizations to advance a collective 

understanding of freshwater health. To adequately support our growing network of over 100 

community partners, strategic outreach and engagement are needed to match diverse 

organizations with the water monitoring tools and resources available to them. 

 

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program 

will be Atlantic Water Network, a project of the Makeway Shared Platform. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for the development of an organizational outreach strategy and creating new avenues to engage current and new community partners across Atlantic Canada. Daily duties may include researching outreach techniques, creating content for web platforms including social media or networking with Atlantic Water Network’s growing network of over 100 community partners. 

 

The successful candidate needs to have strong written and verbal communications skills and have demonstrated experience with community outreach. This position will require creativity, energy, and enthusiasm for engaging diverse audiences in community-driven environmental change. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities  

• Support AWN communications activities under the supervision of the Communications Specialist. Duties include:
  • Creating engaging content (written, photos, videos, graphics) for blogs, social media, AWN’s website, and other communications channels
  • Assisting in the creation of communications training materials and workshops 

• Work with AWN’s Equipment and Training Coordinator to promote the use of water monitoring equipment and AWN’s equipment bank in Halifax. 
• Support the development of an organizational outreach strategy. Duties may include:
  • Project research
  • Regular communication with the AWN team to review questions, concerns and goals.
  • Development and implementation of the strategy. 

• Attend and assist with a choice of virtual or in-person outreach events (at a minimum, monthly) throughout the summer that are run by community environmental organizations, such as water quality monitoring runs, BioBlitzes, webinars, and workshops 
• Participate in and assist with the delivery of equipment training sessions for AWN’s network of community-based water monitoring organizations. 

• Develop and maintain positive relationships with new and existing freshwater community partners. 

 

Requirements/Qualifications: 

• Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
• Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
• Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
• Coursework in education, communications, natural resources management, planning, environmental sciences, or related disciplines. 
• Must be adept in both teamwork and working independently 
• Strong communication (written and oral) and outreach skills with diverse audiences 
• Comfortable communicating difficult scientific concepts to lay audiences 
• Detail-oriented, with demonstrated experience in event planning 
• Experience with environmental monitoring will be considered an asset 
• Volunteer management experience will be considered an asset 

 

Working Conditions
Requires a home office setup and laptop (access to coding software and other tools will be provided).

Willingness to travel within the province and to other Maritime provinces on occasion (as needed) should travel be permitted 

Willingness and ability to work outdoors in various field conditions, should travel be permitted for occasional in-person engagement opportunities
