About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

• Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
• Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
• From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
• Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

The Town of Oxford is a small Municipality in Cumberland County with approximately 1,100 people. We provide various services for our taxpayers. Examples of some of the services we provide are protective, water, sewer, recreation, and transportation.

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be The Town of Oxford. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for maintaining the community gardens and teaching the public gardening life skills. The successful candidate needs to have knowledge in agriculture and the willingness to work along side like minded partners to educate the community the value of food sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities  

• Take lead, supervise, and participate in the proper care of community gardens.
• Be part of the community members committee
• Host a Garden Harvest Festival
• Assist with the planning of the Wild Blueberry Harvest Festival
• Landscaping, Mowing, Edge Trimming as directed.
• Lead and organize a community nature walk along with the recreation department and trails association.
• Work with the solid waste education coordinator to assist in teaching the community the importance of dual stream recycling and compost.
• Prepare soils for planting.
• Plant seeds, tend and harvest plants.
• Monitor plant growth and health.
• Apply garden chemicals if needed.
• Research new methods for cropping storing and processing.
• Creating planting plans for gardens, including timing and plant rotation.
• Other duties may be assigned 

Requirements/Qualifications 

• Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
• Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
• Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
• An understanding of Horticulture techniques.
• Commitment to working in a team environment with established team building abilities.
• Possess a valid drivers license.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft computer software and email.
• Flexibility to adjust to shifting priorities and deadlines.

Working Conditions  

• Travel to off-site locations will be required.
• Steel toe safety boots will be required.
• Work indoors and outdoors. (sun safety)

Physical Requirements 

• Physical ability to left up to 50 pounds.
