Job location: Eskasoni Band Office, 63 Minimall Drive

Wage: $16.50 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

Start Date: Expected May 13, 2024

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

About the host employer

Nestled alongside the Bras d’Or Lake in Eastern Cape Breton, Eskasoni First Nation is the largest Mi’kmaq community in the world. Deeply rooted here is our Mi’kmaq culture. We are proud to say we are the home of the largest Mi’kmaq speaking community with close ties to traditional culture and beliefs.

Summary of position

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Eskasoni Band Office. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for delivering Solid Waste Management workshops, events, and materials to Eskasoni Community Members. The purpose of these is to provide awareness of existing and new information, tools, and techniques that can be used by the community. You will also take part in planning & participating in community clean up events, and waste management stations at community events.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research Information
  • Organize and deliver events & workshops
  • Organize and participate in community clean up initiatives
  • Deliver solid waste products to community members
  • Compare current solid waste management practises
  • Collect community feedback
  • Develop a strategy for promotion, awareness, and education
  • Attend meetings with Diversion Coordinator

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Experience working with First Nations Communities and Fluency in Mi’kmaq is considered an asset;
  • Strong communication skills are considered an asset.

Working Conditions
While most work will be conducted in an office setting, there will be work requiring travel, working outdoors, & heavy lifting, etc.

Some aspects of this position may be physically demanding.
