Hours: 35 hours per week (9-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

Summary of position 
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Municipality of Colchester. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for providing solid waste audits to residents, businesses and at our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to increase recycling recovery rates and landfill diversion. A typical day may include visually inspecting resident curbside waste, inspecting business waste bins and examining recycling trucks at our MRF. The successful candidate needs to have public relations, attention to detail, excellent communication skills as well as an appreciation for waste reduction and landfill diversion.

Duties and responsibilities  

  • Execute, record data and generate reports, findings and recommendations/education for curbside audits. Provide feedback for both residents and haulers
  • Using the road report/Helpline tracker to determine areas where curbside auditing is needed (targeted curbside audits).
  • Provide education to residents and info kits (residential sorting guides, sample bags etc).
  • Review hauler daily road report for curbside rejection data
  • Set-up and attend educational booth session at the Farmer’s Markets.
  • Execute business audits (targeting food establishments)
  • Execute, record data, and generate reports, findings, and recommendations/education for business audits.
  • Determine whether the business is compliant or non-compliant (having correct signage, bins etc.).
  • Provide education to business and info kits (business sorting guide and signage).
  • Execute tipping floor audits at the Material Recovery Facility
  • Report all information to Education, Compliance officers and Manager of the MRF

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • Depending on the working position must wear all PPE as per Municipal guidelines that may include: safety shoes, dusk mask, hard hat, reflective vest, cut proof gloves
  • Must have CSA steel toed shoes. Other PPE is provided by Municipality
  • Have a valid Nova Scotia Drivers License

Working conditions
Working conditions may include; working outside at curbside residents or at businesses, working in the Material Recovery Facility warehouse and office settings. The candidate should be able to work in various weather conditions including hot and cold.

Physical requirements
The person may be required to wear a full face mask and personal protective equipment.  Working at a desk, potentially sitting for long periods of time.  Working in the field or in the warehouse, potentially standing for long periods of time.
