Job title: Watershed Field Technician

Reports to: Senior Biologist

Job location: 4115 Shore Road, Eskasoni, NS, B1W 1M4

Wage: $17.00 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

Start Date: Expected May 13, 2024

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

About the host employer

Eskasoni Fish & Wildlife Commission (EFWC), located in Eskasoni First Nation, is committed to the protection of the environment and, in particular, habitat necessary for our aquatic and land-based animals to survive and thrive.

EFWC has been involved in Atlantic salmon conservation projects since the early 1990’s.  EFWC’s activities have ranged from stocking up to 7 local brooks with Atlantic salmon and speckled trout, installation of wing deflectors and digger logs, conducting species assessments through electrofishing and dive surveys, monitoring environmental conditions and monitoring local construction and forestry activities for potential impact to fish and fish habitat.

Summary of position

Watershed Field Technician

The community partner for this Summer Student Intern position through the Clean Leadership program will be Eskasoni Fish & Wildlife Commission, reporting to Thomas Johnson, Executive Director. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for monitoring environmental parameters, assisting with species and habitat surveys and monitoring in within Eskasoni First Nation’s watershed.  This position will require both field and lab work as well as participation in knowledge gathering meetings.   The successful candidate needs to have leadership and communication skills, an interest in the environment, and an interest in learning about the natural world.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primary job duties include working as a team with other interns, collecting data in the field, entering data, planning and problem solving while working in a team environment

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;

Working Conditions
This position will require the intern to work in the office and in the field.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to hike for prolonged periods of time and work in and around water safely.
