About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship.
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship.
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer.
About the host employer
Potlotek First Nation takes pride in our youth/students. We are a community of approximately 800 members. We strive to help not only our youth but the community at large. Education is considered very important, and we have a huge population of students from elementary to post secondary. Potlotek is in the center of Mik’maki and is home to the Chapel Island Ste Anne’s.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Potlotek First Nation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for assisting the public works director in all aspects of community support and beautification as requested by the director. The intern will educate homeowners to properly dispose of their garbage and to recycle. The successful candidate needs to have a passion for the environment, willingness to work independently and as part of a team, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Educate the community especially new homeowners, the importance of proper disposal and sorting of garbage i.e. blue bags, clear and green bags and how to dispose broken glass and metals.
- Make recycling flyers to hand out to all community homes.
- Initiate and encourage community to recycle batteries and provide a drop off area.
- Landscaping will be a huge part in this internship.
- Maintain inventory and order materials as required.
- Set up sales at markets, roadside.
- Clean working areas
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment.
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback.
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset.
- Preference will be given to Potlotek First Nation Band Members
Working Conditions
Working conditions will be a combination of in office, working outdoors in all weather conditions, and working directly within communities.
Physical Requirements
Occasional light to heavy lifting up to 30 Ibs, sitting/standing for long periods of time, working
outdoors.
