About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee
status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada; - Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
Potlotek First Nation takes pride in our youth/students. We are a community of approximately
800 members. We strive to help not only our youth but the community at large. Education is
considered very important and we have a huge population of students from elementary to post
secondary. Potlotek is located in the center of Mik’maki and is home to the Chapel Island Ste
Ann’s Mission.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program
will be Potlotek First Nation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for assisting the
greenhouse manager in all aspects required to run a successful greenhouse. You will assist in the
planting, upkeep, harvesting and sales of products. You will watch the seedlings grow from start
to finish. You will serve Potlotek First Nation first and then expand to outside communities if
there is an abundance of produce and providing some to our own Food Bank. The successful
candidate needs to have have a passion for the environment, willingness to work independently
and as part of a team, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare soil, plant bulbs, seeds and cuttings, graft and bud plants; and transplant
seedlings and rooted cuttings - Monitor plants for healthy growth and potential weed, insect, disease and fertilizer
problems in greenhouse crops - Position and regulate greenhouse and outdoor irrigation systems to water plants and
fields - Dig, cut and transplant trees, shrubs, flowers and plants and prepare them for sale
Provide information to customers on gardening, the use of various garden tools and
products and the care of trees, shrubs, flowers, plants and lawns - May operate tractors and other machinery and equipment to fertilize, cultivate, harvest
and spray fields and plants - Maintain inventory and order materials as required
- Set up sales at markets, roadside
- Clean working areas
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work
environment; - Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is
considered an asset; - Must be a full-time student Post Secondary student and intending to return to school in
Fall of 2024 - Preference will be given to Potlotek First Nation Band Members
Working Conditions
Working conditions will be a combination of in office, working outdoors in all weather
conditions, and working directly within communities
Physical Requirements
Occasional light to heavy lifting up to 30 Ibs, sitting/standing for long periods of time, working
outdoors
