About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Prince Edward Island for the duration of the internship; and, 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer.  

About the host employer 

The Environmental Coalition of PEI is a registered charity committed to promoting better understanding and stewardship of our Island environment.  We began in 1989, and two years later, we started the award-winning Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project.  Macphail Woods is dedicated to the restoration of the Wabanaki/Acadian Forest.  We run children’s nature camps, have a four-acre native plant nursery and arboretum, offer a wide variety of nature-based walks and workshops, and extensively teach forest restoration.  Over the past three years, we have been carrying out research projects on black ash, and the krummholz forests that run along the province’s north shore.    

Summary of position  

Undertake biological field monitoring protocols: organizing and implementing field studies to enrich ecological habitats within Agricultural landscapes . 

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Assist in conducting field research and surveys to collect data and samples for both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. 
  • Collect and analyze fresh/saltwater water samples, eel grass bed blue carbon sampling, deployment of in-situ probes, lab analysis of H2O field samples, extraction/prep/shipping of soil samples to UNB. 
  • Conduct Atlantic Salmon habitat/spawning site targeted enhancement initiative, plus general in stream species fish habitat enhancement protocols. 
  • Undertake hedgerow/riparian enhancement measures: native tree and shrub planting. 
  • Assist BBEMA Coordinator to implement thermo UAV (drone) stream and GPS/GIS technology to conduct ecological monitoring related to habitat restoration – (vegetation surveys, headwater stream surveys, map erosion and sediment runoff) 
  • Assist with delivery of BBEMA Youth Environmental Programs: Adopt a River, Adopt-a-Pond and in class/field trips for both schools and daycare. 
  • Liaison with farmers and private industry (Cavendish Farms Inc.) to enhance biodiversity within agricultural landscapes –targeting wildlife corridors, pollinator habitats, migratory songbird nesting habitats adjacent to farm fields. 
  • Supervise Citizen Science Youth environmental projects that promote and improve sustainable development practices and the protection of natural areas through native tree and shrub planting. 
  • Provide field support for other programs provided by BBEMA, such as aquatic habitat enhancement (ponds/estuaries), Pollinator habitat monitoring, invasive species monitoring, hedgerow revitalization, BBEMA community outreach booth/events. Other Duties: 
  • Office work will involve online database entry, analyzing and interpreting data, and writing scientific reports

Requirements/Qualifications 

Applicants should have or be pursuing a college degree in biology, botany, wildlife, or other related natural resources field.  

Essential Skills: Experience conducting field work using various monitoring protocols, including standard survey methods and site observations. Ability to work both as part of a team and independently Comfortable interacting with youth, general community members and private landowners. Good verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to enter data accurately onto a mobile device and computer. Applicants must be willing and able to work outside under sometimes difficult field and environmental conditions * Possession of a valid driver’s license is an asset. 

Working Conditions
The successful candidate should have a willingness to work outside in all weather conditions. 

Physical Requirements
This job requires a suitable level of fitness to walk through woodlands, but there is no heavy lifting or overly long hikes.
