Wage: $18.00 / hour

Hours: 37.5-40 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Prince Edward Island for the duration of the internship; and,
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer.

About the host employer

The Southeast Environmental Association Watershed Management Region is made up of six
main watersheds including: Boughton, Cardigan, Brudenell, Montague-Valleyfield, Sturgeon,
and Murray River/Murray Harbour. It is located in the southeast region of Prince Edward Island
and covers a total land area of ~732 km2. It is the largest watershed management region on PEI
covering 13% of total PEI land area. The region includes ~670kms of streams, 33 subwatersheds, PEI’s largest freshwater lake, six bays, two harbours, and several small offshore
islands.

Summary of position 

The Field Supervisor acts as the main point of communication between the field staff and the main
office. They are responsible for planning and carrying out watershed protection activities, manage
the work schedules and timesheets for all field staff, supervise field crews, review project progress
to ensure that deadlines are met, and ensure that safety policies are strictly adhered to.

Duties and Responsibilities  

Planning

  • Delivery of SEA’s Stream Restoration & Enhancement Program.
  • Plan and coordinate fieldwork activities of watershed planning and enhancement.
  • Collect field information to support funding applications to government and other
    agencies.
  • Plan and deliver educational activities and youth outreach programs.
    Field Work
  • Carry out on-the-ground enhancement activities such as brushmat installation, tree &
    shrub planting, removal of debris from waterways and riparian areas, installing nest
    boxes and building walking trails, etc.
  • Supervise project activities and crew members assigning duties to meet performance
    standards.
  • Enforce safety rules and ensure that staff has the proper certification and proper safety
    gear for operating all field tools & equipment: including chainsaws, limbing/brush saws,
    axes/pruners, mowers, etc.
  • Ensure project deliverables are being met.
  • Liaise with technical experts on watershed restoration activities as needed.
  • Liaise with community residents and landowners to acquire landowner permission for
    access to streams and obtain historical information on streams for surveys.
  • Manage/maintain all field equipment: inventory, use, and storage.

Communications

  • Produce weekly summaries and monthly reports and submit to Project Coordinator.
  • Assist with the development of public info materials (i.e. brochures, newsletters,
    community posters).
  • Assist in organizing and presenting at public meetings and educational events.
    Administrative Management
  • Keep track of field staff hours and submit to Projects Coordinator for payroll.
  • Record information necessary for final reporting: taking before & after photos,
    maintaining appropriate and accurate data records/field notes, recording number and
    coordinates for built structures (i.e. brushmats, nest boxes, planting sites, etc.), length of
    stream worked on, etc.
  • Produce weekly summaries, monthly reports, and a final seasonal/annual report.
  • Manage field staff relations in accordance the Human Relations Policy.
  • Abide by the by-laws, code of conduct and other polices that apply to SEA.
  • Prepare for and attend board meetings as required.

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field and/or two-year diploma in a related field.
  • Experience is an asset.
  • Supervisory experience of small teams in outdoor field settings.
  • Able to handle physical tasks such as heavy lifting and walking for extended periods in
    various outdoor habitats and weather conditions: fields, woods, streams, etc.
  • Chainsaw certification, or 5+ years experience using a chainsaw. (We can arrange
    certification).
  • Background in stream hydrology, conservation, forest management, silviculture, ecology,
    wildlife/environment conservation, and/or other relevant field.
  • First Aid certification required and openness to continuous learning required.
  • Project coordination, public relations & writing skills all considered assets.
  • Ability to manage in a collaborative style required.
