Job location: 126 Portland Street, Dartmouth (hybrid)

Wage: $21.50 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship) 

Start Date: Expected May 20, 2025

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects. 

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

Clean Foundation is a Nova Scotia-based independent, non-governmental environmental charity that began in 1988. Our passion is providing the knowledge, tools, and inspiration needed to encourage actions that lead to positive environmental change. We also support the fair transition to a cleaner economy and greener society.

Summary of position  

The host employer for this summer internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Clean Foundation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for supporting the program’s native seed collection efforts through field,  laboratory, and computer work. As a part of Thriving Forests’ goal of creating a native hardwood supply chain in the province, you will work to advance the goals of the program through supporting site visits and seed collection, creating field itineraries, managing scientific equipment, and conducting data analysis. The successful candidate needs to have strong attention to detail, accurate record-keeping and strong organizational and time management skills. The candidate must be team-oriented, have strong interpersonal skills and be suited to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team or individually. They must be comfortable working in the field in different weather conditions and willing to work after hours if necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Developing and updating project workplans, tracking documents, and providing status updates to the Program Leads on project milestones and deliverables.
  • Supporting planning, logistics, and inventory management of field days including being in the field as required.
  • Assisting the Seed Collection & Nursery Engagement Specialist with seed collection, community workshops, laboratory processing and analysis
  • Supporting in scheduling and leading meetings, attending stakeholder meetings, and coordinating stakeholder groups as needed.
  • Conducting background research and providing written and oral summaries on sector specific topics.
  • Supporting Program Lead with assessment, monitoring and deliverable reports.
  • Managing inventory across departments
  • Developing and leading safe work practices, ensure paperwork is filled out and coordinate toolbox talks for the department.

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 

Working Conditions  

  • Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Forestry, Biology, Resource and Environmental management, or equivalent experience is an asset
  • An understanding of forest ecosystems in Nova Scotia.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments, assignments, and multiple priorities.
  • Experience in research and data analysis.
  • Experience in fieldwork and comfort in being in all types of outdoor environments and weather.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot issues.
  • Ability to conduct physically demanding work outdoors, for extended periods of time and in bad weather.
  • Experience in report writing, research and data analysis.
  • High computer proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Physical Requirements 

  • Hybrid work environment with our Dartmouth Office
  • Additional hours, or time outside of the normal work hours, may be required to meet operational requirements of planning and delivering specific projects at specific times of the year.
  • Occasional field work in various weather conditions, in varying degrees of terrain while carrying field supplies up to 35 lbs.
  • Combination of remote and in-office hours.
  • 35-hour work week.
  • Travel within NS will be required during field seasons.
