About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

Clean Foundation works in the ancestral and unceded territories of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik. While Clean Foundation’s primary mainland Nova Scotian office is in downtown Dartmouth, this position will see the successful candidate travel regularly – both locally and around the province to deliver educational programming.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Clean Foundation’s Education and Engagement team. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for delivering fun, engaging, hands-on environmental education programs to youth ages 4-18. You will be working closely with our Environmental Educators and Summer Programs Coordinator, regularly travelling to program sites around HRM and the province. The successful candidate needs to have a valid Nova Scotian Driver’s license and be above the age of 21 to operate Clean’s fleet of electric vehicles. Candidates must be willing to complete a Driver’s Abstract check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver high quality, fun, engaging environmental education programs and workshops to children and youth aged 4-18;
- Support the improvement of existing workshops by suggesting adjustments to activities and experiences and sourcing additional resources;
- Support the Summer Programs Coordinator with trip planning, inventory maintenance, and other project tasks;
- Support the promotion of our education programs through social media, capturing photos or videos, assisting with our monthly newsletter, etc.;
- Support the Education & Engagement team with other projects and duties as required.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Knowledgeable on environmental topics such as sustainability, environmental science, renewable energy, and climate change;
- Undergraduate courses in Environmental Science, Biology, Sustainability, Education etc., considered an asset;
- Previous experience leading groups of children or youth ages 4-18;
- Strong oral communication skills and confident presenting in front of groups;
- A passion for environmental sustainability, conservation, education, environmentally friendly practices, etc.;
- Must be able to participate in overnight trips around the province for program delivery;
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be 21 years of age or older (as per company fleet policy).
Working Conditions
This position involves frequent work with the public (mainly youth) and includes regular travel in the form of day-trips and overnight trips around the province. Much of this work will be outdoors.
Physical Requirements
This position requires leading physically active games, as well as loading/unloading program materials from the vehicles to the program sites, up to a maximum of 50 lbs (23 kgs).
