Reports to: Jessica Bradford, Special Projects Manager, Ocean Tracking Network & Alanna Syliboy, Community, Education & Engagement Manager, Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq 

Job location: The successful applicant will be expected to work from the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq offices in Millbrook. Due to the scope of the role, travel for outreach events and meetings with partners will be required. 

Wage: $22/ hour 

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship) 

Start Date: Expected May 20, 2025

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects. 

Program Requirements 

• Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  

• Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 

• From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 

• Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

The successful applicant will be employed by the Ocean Tracking Network at Dalhousie University but will be hosted by and work primarily under the supervision of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq in Millbrook. 

The successful applicant will primarily support activities for Apoqnmatulti’k (Mi’kmaw for we help each other)— a collaborative research project funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The project partners include the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq (CMM), the Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources (UINR), commercial fisher Darren Porter, Ocean Tracking Network (OTN), Dalhousie University, Acadia University, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). This collaborative initiative pairs Mi’kmaw, local and western scientific ways of knowing to track the movements and seasonal habitat use of valued aquatic species within Pekwitapa’qek (Bay of Fundy) and Pitu’pa’q (Bras d’Or Lake). 

Summary of position  

This position is part of a collaborative research program, Apoqnmatulti’k, and will be co-supported by OTN and CMM, with work activities taking place primarily under the guidance of CMM in Millbrook. In this position, you will be responsible for coordinating and supporting outreach opportunities to engage with local and Mi’kmaw communities around the Minas Basin about Apoqnmatulti’k. You will work with project partners and community liaisons to seek out and support opportunities to foster existing and new relationships to help connect communities to the project and facilitate the two-way exchange of knowledge. The successful candidate needs to have strong verbal and written communication skills and be comfortable interacting with the public. 

Duties and Responsibilities  

• Support the coordination and delivery of outreach and engagement initiatives with local and Mi’kmaw communities as well as the general public.  

• Work with project partners and community liaisons to coordinate community workshops and other activities to share and exchange knowledge.  

• Identify opportunities to foster and develop positive relationships with partner communities.  

• Provide written summaries of outreach events and events to support project communications and reporting.  

• Participate in project meetings, including the communications and student subcommittee meetings.  

• Support additional communication and field work activities as needed. 

Requirements/Qualifications 

• Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 

• Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 

• Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 

• Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment with an interdisciplinary team; 

• Previous outreach and engagement experience, specifically with local and Mi’kmaw communities is considered an excellent asset;  

• Punctuality, reliability and introductory knowledge of science and research; 

• Creativity and ability to problem solve. 

Working Conditions
The successful applicant will work closely with Apoqnmatulti’k partner organizations, communities and the general public. Occasional evening and weekend work is expected. Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions may be required.
