Wage: $21.00 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

About the host employer

The Ecology Action Centre is an environmental charity based in Mi’kma’ki. We take leadership on critical environmental issues from biodiversity protection to climate change to environmental justice. The EAC takes a 50-year perspective on what is needed to build towards a time of thriving and flourishing. We work to equip human and ecological communities for resilience and build a world where ecosystems and communities are restored not just sustained.

The Ecology Action Centre’s transportation team works to increase the use of transportation modes, like walking, cycling, and transit use, in Nova Scotia that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote healthy communities, and ensure equitable access for all. Our office is located in Halifax.

Summary of position 

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Ecology Action Centre. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for cycling opportunities for newcomer, Mi’kmaq, African Nova Scotian communities and other underserved groups. The successful candidate needs to have a passion for mobility justice and active transportation; the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; and a willingness to travel across Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia for up to 3 weeks at a time.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Assist coordinator with set up of Pop-Up Bike Hub trailer and attend open hours
  • Travel with the trailer across the province for the various community partnerships
  • Maintain trailer space & material inventory
  • Repair second-hand bikes
  • Assist community members with basic bike repairs
  • Recruit community members to volunteer in the space
  • Deliver Making Tracks sessions directly to children and youth as required
  • Prepare and maintain training materials and sessional information
  • Collect, record and report volunteer numbers and hours from events, training sessions and bike repair nights
  • Collect and input survey data
  • Check-in with participants
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and comfortable work environment
  • Keep accurate records and reports of sessional information, space usage engagement & activities
  • Participate in leader training and professional development opportunities as required
  • Collect stories, images & quotes for social media
  • Attend/support other Transportation Team events on evenings or weekends as required.
  • Participate in orientation
  • Attend transportation team meetings
  • Attend EAC meetings
  • Participate in EAC culture
  • Act as an ambassador for the Transportation Team programs and the work of the EAC in general

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • A passion for mobility justice and active transportation
  • Proven skills as a relationship builder; facilitator and leader
  • Able to work in a high-paced environment; can effectively prioritize/manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent communication skills: networking, facilitation, public speaking, writing
  • Commitment to high-caliber program delivery, development and evaluation
  • Experience as a leader delivering programs to young adults, youth and children.
  • Able to ride a bicycle
  • Willingness to learn basic bike mechanics
  • Persistent, diplomatic, creative, optimistic, with a team-oriented approach
  • Computer literate in Word, Excel, internet, email and file/data management
  • Willing to work some regular evenings and occasional weekends and travel within HRM or Nova Scotia
  •  Clear Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Abuse Registry Check

Working Conditions
Interns will work from a variety of locations:

  • Office space will be provided at the EAC office at 2705 Fern lane
  • Bike Again (DIY community bike repair space) at 5664 Charles St
  • In the community
  • Interns will travel with the Pop-Up Bike Hub across the province – transportation and accommodations provided
  • or within HRM by bicycle (bicycle can be provided if needed)
  • Much of the work takes place outside in a variety of weather conditions. Tents are provided for modest rain/sun protection.

Physical Requirements
This position is hands-on, with interns repairing bikes, organizing tools and supplies, and lifting bikes and other materials as part of the day-to-day operations of the job.
