Job title: Climate Change Study Intern

Reports to: Diane Basque, Indigenous Employment Officer and Anita Basque, Elder Liaison 

Job location: 342 Sitmuk Road/12044 hwy 4, Potlotek NS B0E3B0 

Wage: $17/hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship) 

Start Date: Expected May 20, 2025

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

Potlotek First Nation takes pride in our youth/students. We are a community of approximately 800 members. We strive to help not only our youth but the community at large. Education is considered very important, and we have a huge population of students from elementary to post secondary. Potlotek is the center of Mi’kma’ki and is home the the Chapel Island St. Anne’s Mission. 

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Potlotek First Nation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for doing climate change research and combine all collected date for Potlotek First Nation. Intern will also be doing fieldwork along shorelines and plant sites. The successful candidate needs to have passion to work outdoors as well as in an office setting.  

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Research will be the biggest thing as the intern will have to focus on issues we face with the effects of climate change to our plant life. 
  • Interns will reach out to UINR and other agencies to see whether they have any prior documentation of this problem. 
  • Fieldwork is very important, and the intern will document any concerns that arise at this time. 
  • Final reporting will be submitted to Potlotek First Nation and to the Kisiku Center. 

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
  • Must be between the ages of 15-30 at time of internship. 
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada 
  • Must be a full-time Post Secondary student and intending to return to school in Fall of 2025. 

Working Conditions
Working conditions will be a combination of in-office and working outdoors in all weather conditions and working directly within communities. 

Physical Requirements
Light lifting, sitting or walking for long periods of time and working outdoors.
