About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
Halifax Cycling Coalition works to make cycling in Halifax Regional Municipality safer, more comfortable and more accepted by advocating for safer infrastructure and by providing and supporting inclusive programs that educate and involve community members.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Halifax Cycling Coalition. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for planning and executing a program of summer activities and events that engage and educate the public about the benefits of supporting cycling and provide activities for people who would like to ride more to feel more comfortable riding in Halifax. The successful candidate needs to have excellent organizational and communication skills and be able to comfortably ride a bike in an urban setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under supervision and mentorship of seasoned professionals, both board members and other volunteers, the intern will assist with, and in some cases lead the summer activities of Halifax Cycling Coalition. Specifically:
- Events: assist with planning and execution of a schedule of summer events, including community bike rides, community tables at events such as Nova Multifest, bike maintenance workshops and bike valet at major events like Bluenose Marathon.
- Social media and website: in collaboration with others, plan and execute content creation for both our website and social media.
- Research: under direction, conduct secondary research to inform both advocacy and public education.
- Cycling navigation: assist with our public launch of the Cycling Guide app, and contribute to improvements by riding routes, taking photographs, and updating OpenStreetMaps data.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills including experience planning and holding events.
- Ability to ride a bike comfortably in an urban setting.
Working Conditions
The job will entail both remote desk work and in-person representation of Halifax Cycling Coalition at public events. Some activities will involve leading groups in bike rides in less than ideal weather conditions.
