Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects. 

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

The Valley Region Solid Waste-Resource Management Authority is a body corporate formed under an Inter-Municipal Services Agreement encompassing the Municipality of the County of Kings, and the Towns of Annapolis Royal, Berwick, Kentville, Middleton and Wolfville. Valley Waste-Resource Management manages all solid waste services for the municipalities as well as 3 First Nations Communities. These services include roadside collection, landfill disposal, recycling processing, organics processing, the operation of two transfer stations, and education and enforcement programs. The primary work location for this position is 90 Donald E. Hiltz Connector Rd., Kentville.

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Valley Waste-Resource Management. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for the delivery of education to residents, businesses, and cottage owners on curbside recycling programs as well as developing and providing education programs that raise awareness of recycling stewardship programs being implemented in the Valley Region. This role will be primarily based in the office and on our site in Kentville, NS with travel across all of the Annapolis Valley. The successful candidate needs to have a passion for environmental education, experience in program implementation, and excellent organizational skills.  

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Become familiar with general VWRM programs and services;
  • With the help of the education team, develop education materials and create a timeline for the projects.
  • Research and review environmental education programs, conduct site visits, and assess any challenges.
  • Deliver education materials to residents, businesses and cottage owners. Engage with the local community and participate in meetings and events.
  • Assist education staff with public events and initiatives including farm markets, Compost Awareness and Environment Week activities.

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;  
  • Have knowledge of environmental program design or implementation.

  • Able to plan and efficiently execute an independent work plan; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. 
  • Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including the public, seniors, university students/faculty, high school students, and elementary school children/teachers; 
  • A thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and Canva. 
  • A valid driver’s license.
