About the host employer
North Shore Rivers Restoration Association
The NSRRA is a conservation organization that is dedicated to the preservation of freshwater aquatic species, and their habitat. Established in 1999, the NSRRA assumed the habitat restoration duties from Maritimes and Northeast Pipelines, resulting from the pipeline construction in the French and Waughs River watersheds. In 2023, the NSRRA began a period of growth and expansion. This expansion was the result of a recognition that there were neighboring watersheds that had stable populations of Atlantic salmon and trout but limited or no conservation, habitat restoration or monitoring efforts were being conducted. By increasing our focus we have strengthened our relationships with existing conservation partners, established new relationships with conservation partners, increased our volunteer and membership base.
2024 was a very busy year for us! With the help of The Clean Foundation of Atlantic we were able to successfully implement Phase 1 of our Wallace River Watershed Management Plan. Activities included riparian zone rehabilitation, instream habitat rehabilitation, connectivity assessments and fish passage rehabilitation plus community outreach activities. Our association also continued our efforts in the Waughs & French River Watersheds. Structure inventory assessments and repairs, broodstock collection, parr release and fish ladder monitoring were some of the activities completed in these watersheds.
The NSRRA’s conservation and habitat restoration efforts in the past 25 years have been quite extensive. The success of these projects would not have been possible without the involvement of other conservation partners. We have close working relationships with federal, provincial, and municipal governments, other conservation organizations, Indigenous groups, corporate entities, and a dedicated group of volunteers. Our summer employment program has also provided opportunities for local students in the area, and our current president was formerly one of those students.
