About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Municipality of Colchester. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for providing solid waste audits at residential curbside, businesses and at the Municipalities owned and operated Material Recovery Facility (MRF) increase recycling recovery rates and landfill diversion. A typical day may include visually inspecting residential curbside material, businesses and received material at the MRF. The successful candidate needs to have public relations, attention to detail, excellent communication skills as well as an appreciation for waste reduction and landfill diversion.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work in consultation with the Environmental and Education Officer to audit curbside Solid Waste including garbage, compost and recycling materials. Also audit material in a warehouse setting at the MRF for recycled materials
- Execute, record data and generate reports, findings and recommendations/education for curbside and MRF audits. Provide feedback for both residents, haulers and various Municipal organizations
- Provide education to residents and info kits (residential sorting guides, sample bags etc).
- Report all information to Education, Compliance officers and Manager of the MRF
- Set-up and attend educational booth session at the Farmer’s Markets.
- Assist in any Waste Reduction presentations including classroom and summer camps through the year
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Ability to use Cloud based storage platforms (SharePoint, OneDrive) as well as Microsoft Products (Excel, Word) considered an asset
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Depending on the working position must wear all PPE as per Municipal guidelines that may include: safety shoes, dusk mask, hard hat, reflective vest, cut proof gloves
- Have a valid Nova Scotia Drivers License
Working Conditions
May include; working outside at curbside residents or at businesses, working in the Material Recovery Facility warehouse and office settings. The candidate should be able to work in various weather conditions including hot and cold. Must be comfortable working in environments where exposure to various odors and strong smells associated with solid waste.
Physical Requirements
The person may be required to wear a full face mask and personal protective equipment. Working at a desk, potentially sitting for long periods of time. Working in the field or in the warehouse, potentially standing for long periods of time. Ability to lift 25lbs.
