About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

The Halifax Brewery Farmers Market Cooperative (HBM) is a not-for-profit co-op founded in 2010, and operating a weekly year round farmers market in the historical brewery square in downtown Halifax. There has been a farmers market in our building since 1983, and we have been part of a proud history of city markets in Halifax since 1750. Our market provides an inexpensive retail location for over 65 active small-scale agricultural, agri-food, and maker vendors. Our mandate is to cooperatively support local farmers and agrarians in bringing sustainable produce to Haligonians and to create a vibrant community space.

Summary of position 

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Halifax Brewery Market  In this position, you will be mainly responsible for bringing enthusiasm and dedication to the day-to-day operations of the farmers market and reducing the market’s negative impact on the environment. The candidate should be passionate about food, local farming, agriculture and community. 

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Help with setup and tear down of the market. 
  • Maintain a clean and welcoming space 
  • Support waste diversion program  
  • Support the re-organization of our Durable Dishes Program, including the research of a take-aways/take-backs program 
  • Support our Free-Little-Libraries Program (seeds, bags, books and tupperwear) 
  • Help use economies of scale to increase use of compostable onsite 
  • Help create customer-facing educational materials to reduce waste onsite 

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • A commitment to anti-oppression, anti-racism, anti-colonialism and unlearning
  • A passion for community built through food
  • You’re enthusiastic to participate in both exciting and mundane activities
