Wage: $17.20 (previously 16.80/hour)
Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
The Nova Scotia Indigenous Tourism Enterprise Network (NSITEN) head office is located in Whycocomagh, NS, was incorporated in 2017 as a not-for-profit organization. NSITEN works to develop both short and long term capacity building initiatives for Indigenous owned tourism businesses and individuals involved in the tourism industry (artists/crafters/cultural performers, musicians, dancers, etc) as well as supporting the very important contributions of our Elders and cultural subject matter experts).
NSITEN aims to strengthen cultural and business offerings of qualified Indigenous business owners and community enterprises focused on tourism. NSITEN is focused on the development of Mi’kmaw Sustainable Cultural Tourism in Mi’kmaw’ki (Nova Scotia). Through in-depth, meaningful community engagement, NSITEN recently developed a 5-year Mi’kmaw Cultural Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy titled, “Walking Forward Together” as part of this work the following vision statement was created to reflect the ideal future state of Mi’kmaw Sustainable Cultural Tourism:
“Mi’kmaw culture and tradition is vibrant and thriving in Mi’kma’ki (Nova Scotia) and globally recognized as the destination of choice for visitors seeking meaningful, authentic Indigenous experiences which contributes to the development of sustainable, authentic, Mi’kmaw cultural experiences and products resulting in a healthy socio-economic Mi’kmaw economy driven by the philosophy of Netukulimk as the primary measurement of quality of life resulting in meaningful steps towards reconciliation”.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Nova Scotia Indigenous Tourism Enterprise Network. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for :
Research Mi’kmaw Traditional Food and Practices
- The interns will work together to conduct a variety of research including desktop, in Community (firsthand with Elders, Knowledge experts, tourism operators, and tourism organizations. Interns will be responsible for conducting interviews both in-person and virtual regarding traditional a variety of food practices, gathering, preparing, cooking, rituals, ceremonies and how to best sustain these practices for the next seven generations. Interns will document their findings using photographs, video, and in writing.
Community Engagment and Outreach
- The interns will lead community engagement and outreach related to storytelling and collecting information related to Mi’kmaw traditional foods and explore the connection to land and culture.
Documenting and Reporting
- Mi’kmaw Sustainable Food Tourism Coordinators will work with Community leaders, knowledge experts, Elders, NSITEN allies and partners to gather valuable information regarding traditional Mi’kmaw Food in all aspects.
- Interns will be responsible for organizing a final report and presentation outlining their research reults.
Event Planning
Interns will plan and coordinate a final event sharing what they learned, key take aways and a feast featuring traditional Mi’kmaw food.
