Energy Advisor Trainee Spotlight: Trinity Lafford-Desmond

May 1, 2024

Trinity Desmond was working as a marine engineer when she was drawn to Clean Foundation’s Energy Advisor Training Program.

“I actually did some research about STEM opportunities,” she explains. “I’ve always enjoyed math and science, but I found that working on a boat wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted. I still valued the technical skills I had and wanted to apply them in a different way. This opportunity with the Energy Advisor Training Program was perfect for that, so I decided to apply.”

Throughout the six-month program, Trinity gained valuable knowledge and specialized skills while earning a livable wage. The program’s combination of education and hands-on experience prepares participants like Trinity for success in various roles in the clean energy sector.

“My favourite part of the program has been being able to go on job shadows and experience what it’s like to be an energy advisor. It’s not just about theory, it’s about practical experience,” says Trinity.

Meeting people from diverse backgrounds has also been a highlight for Trinity, who herself has both Indigenous and African Nova Scotian roots. She’s excited to see this diversity grow within the industry. Looking ahead, she herself aims to specialize in quality assurance and she is looking forward to working in an office setting. She also plans to pursue further certifications in the future.

Trinity’s journey exemplifies the potential for success within the clean energy sector. Supported by Natural Resources Canada, the Native Council of Nova Scotia and Manulife, the Energy Advisor Training Program plays a crucial role in providing opportunities for individuals from underrepresented communities to thrive in the clean energy sector.
