Importance of reforestation

Trees play a massive role in keeping our environment healthy, absorbing carbon dioxide to reduce greenhouse gas emission, replenishing the air with oxygen, and providing habitats for countless wildlife species. Their roots prevent soil erosion, and their presence can influence local climates. This is why when forests become depleted or damaged, it’s essential that reforestation takes place.

Reforestation is the process of replanting trees in areas that have suffered deforestation, crucial for restoring ecosystems. This practice restores and enhances the natural environment and supports biodiversity.

Clean Foundation’s Thriving Forests program, funded by the Government of Canada’s 2 Billion Trees program and the Province of Nova Scotia supports provincial and national efforts to tackle climate change, mitigate biodiversity loss and secure healthy forest ecosystems for future generations of Canadians. Planting to help address the reforestation of areas that have lost trees due to circumstances like wildfires, urbanization and disease is one of the program’s priorities.  Reforestation offers significant benefits such as rebuilding ecosystems that support at risk species that may have been displaced due to human activity.

“Species that can be supported through reforestation include both flora and fauna, ranging from birds, turtles, lynx, bees, and plants such as the Nova Scotia provincial flower—the lady slipper,” said Beth McClelland, Clean’s Thriving Forests Project Specialist.

She notes that reforestation is more than just planting trees. “It’s about increasing the biodiversity of Acadian forests and embracing our environmental responsibility” continues McClelland. “The goal with Thriving Forests, is to help revive Nova Scotia’s biodiversity and forests by planting 21 million trees across the province.”

Individuals and organizations can engage with the Thriving Forests program by expressing interest in tree planting projects, partnering as landowners and/or service providers, or by supporting our wild-seed collection initiatives— Help us locate seed trees across Nova Scotia.
