Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects. 

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer; 

About the host employer 

ACAP Cape Breton was founded in 1992 and it has been our mission to support resilient, environmentally sustainable communities across Unama’ki – Cape Breton ever since. We provide hands-on learning opportunities for students from elementary through post-secondary by inviting the community to our sites to take part in ecosystem restoration and monitoring projects. Our office is at 90 Esplanade, Sydney, Cape Breton 

Summary of position  

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be ACAP Cape Breton. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for co-leading environmental education activities, under the supervision of the Education lead. This position involves significant opportunities for applied professional learning, and we anticipate that the intern will take on progressively more responsibility throughout the season. The successful candidate needs to have a high degree of enthusiasm for working with members of the public, including children, ability to work outdoors for several hours, and strong teamwork skills.

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • High level of responsibility 
  • Discretion and empathy in working with children 
  • Ability to work outdoors for up to 7 hours at a time 
  • Embedded with other teams  
  • Create new programming/curriculum in areas of identified need 

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
  • Prior experience working with children or youth, including in a volunteer capacity, is strongly desired; The candidate should be willing to undergo a criminal record check and a child abuse registry search.  
  • Interest and/or aptitude for science communication. 
  • Ability to communicate with the public in an engaging and professional manner; 
  • Experience working with social media is an asset; 
  • Ability to responsibly manage personal safety during outdoor work, including adhering to weather appropriate dress, and following directions from team leads; 
  • Willingness to learn supervisory skills and oversee program activities; 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others, demonstrate leadership over tasks assigned to you; 

Working Conditions
Indoor, use of a computer; Some outdoor activities (up to 7 hour days at a time) 

Physical Requirements
The ability to participate in programming with children- short walks, garden planting, moving around classroom workshops is desired. Modifications and adaptations according to physical needs can be arranged (e.g. only outdoors with access to a nearby washroom, conducting workshops from a seated position, etc.)
