Summary of the Position:
Reporting to the Manager of Energy Programs, Home Energy Consultants are certified professionals who perform detailed assessments of building performance on existing homes or multi-unit buildings for a number of Clean’s energy programs. Home Energy Consultants assess the best materials, upgrades and retrofits for each home. They provide program participants with information on their home’s current energy usage and recommendations on how to maximize air quality, comfort and energy efficiency. Clean’s Home Energy Consultants can be cross trained on multiple programs. Some of the duties and responsibilities outlined below may apply to one program but not another.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communications: Act as first point of contact for program participants from the point of scheduling an initial site visit to file closure. Communicate with the Scheduling Team to develop and manage an ongoing appointment schedule. Where lateness or cancellation is unavoidable, ensure that the homeowner and the supervisor are notified immediately. Respond to participant calls, issues and complaints pertaining to your energy audits within two business days. Maintain strong channels with Clean’s technical team for upgrade plan approvals and implementation.
- Field Work: Attend all scheduled appointments. Review paperwork package and conduct an education session with each participant during initial home assessments. Collect detailed and accurate on-site information about the building with data collection forms, measurements of house geometry and photographs. Install upgrades such as caulking, weatherstripping, dehumidifiers and other simple energy efficiency and/or air quality products. Verify the quality of upgrades completed in participant homes during follow-up site visits.
- Office Work: Collect energy assessment fees and deliver to Clean. Develop and submit home energy models using HOT2000 software within the framework provided by Natural Resources Canada. Complete and submit estimates within no more than 10 business days of initial assessments. Mail or email an upgrade report and EnerGUIDE label to participants within 14 calendar days of each assessment. Submit bi-weekly mileage and expense claims to in accordance with Clean’s guidelines.
- Health & Safety: Review Clean’s Occupational Health & Safety Policy and fully comply with that policy at all times. Use of appropriate PPE such as gloves, CSA-approved footwear, respirators, safety glasses, etc. Ensure that all job-related safety certificates such as first aid and respirator fit tests are all up to date.
- Additional training, meetings or other job-related duties as assigned.
Education & Required Qualifications:
- Computer proficiency including Windows 10, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrated proficiency in mathematics and geometry.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication and client management skills.

Assets:
- Completion of the Energy Advisor Exam: https://nrcan.ysasecure.com/products
- Post-secondary education and/or job experience in a relevant field such as construction, architecture, engineering, HVAC, energy management, etc.
- In-depth knowledge of local residential construction practices, building materials and residential heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of building science including the principles of the “house as a system” and energy efficiency retrofit practices.
- Experience in project planning and management, cost estimations, subcontracting, measurement and verification, or other related skills.

Working Conditions:
Home Energy Consultants work in the homes of individuals in a wide range of living conditions; the job often requires some degree of compassion and tact. Home Energy Consultants are required to travel to scheduled appointments and must provide their own vehicle—Clean offers flat-rate mileage compensation. Clean currently serves the entire Province of Nova Scotia; travel may sometimes require overnight lodging—Clean offers per-diem payments and subsidization of lodging when overnight travel is required. During the home energy assessments, Home Energy Consultants are required to work both in and outside of the home, under inclement weather, in spaces where access or conditions may be challenging such as attics and crawl spaces, at heights up to 10 feet using ladders, and under conditions that require a respirator (supplied by Clean).
Physical Requirements:
- Climbing up and down ladders.
- Transporting and assembling blower door units.
- Lifting and carrying up to approximately 50 lbs.
- Reaching and working above the head.
- Use of basic hand tools.
