About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be ACAP Cape Breton.
Summary of position
In this position, you will be mainly responsible for working as a member of the Trashformers community waste education and clean-up crew members. The Trashformers are a joint partnership between ACAP Cape Breton and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM). They are community ambassadors, waste educators, and waste removal experts. Together with community volunteers and support staff, the Trashformers remove approximately 5,000 kg of litter from around the CBRM. The Trashformers travel across the CBRM in a specially marked Trashformers truck, leading clean-ups. There is usually 1 office day per week, which might include working on videos, participating in learning activities with other interns, or joining the environmental education team for a special event. The successful candidate needs to have to have strong teamwork and communication skills, an adaptable and positive mindset and the ability to work outdoors for up to six hours per day.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate as part of a team, working outdoors in the community and at special events and acting as an ambassador for waste diversion in the CBRM
- Collect accurate data on waste in communities, shorelines, and freshwater environments;
- Collect water quality data
- Adhere to safety protocols and support other team members in identifying and responding to potential hazards;
- Help create engaging educational and social media content, including videos, infographics and more.
- Participate in occasional team travel to Inverness county for special events.
- Participate in learning opportunities with other teams, including environmental education, habitat restoration and pollinator monitoring.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Positive attitude with an ability to work as part of a team;
- Ability to work outdoors; this is an ideal position for someone who likes to stay active.
- Ability to adhere to data collection protocols.
- Ability to take responsibility for your own safety.
- Interest in waste diversion and the clean economy is an asset.
- Interest in video production and/or environmental communication and/or social media engagement is an asset.
Working Conditions
Working outdoors in a variety of conditions, for up to 6 hours a day (with frequent breaks and a paid lunch break).
Physical Requirements
The Trashformers is a physically demanding job. Normally, four days/week are spent outdoors leading clean-ups and other activities.
