About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
• Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
• From and/or residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
• Must not be an immediate family member of host employer
About The Host Employer
Homi Garden grows vegetables naturally without spray. We grow diverse vegetables with many heritage and Asian varieties. We sell primarily at the farmers market along with a weekly community supported agriculture food box. Our goal is to cultivate real, living soil to enable out vegetables to be high in nutrition while having a small carbon footprint. We want to contribute to a healthier community for both our society and our environment. Homi Garden Farm is located approximately five kilometers away from our primary market.
Summary of position
In this position, you will be mainly responsible for helping the farmer with all aspects of farm operation and customer service. Ideally, we would start by 7 am and would have a short meeting to discuss the tasks of the day. Every day is different but usually the morning involves physical work like harvesting or bed prep. In the afternoon, we may do some seed starting or maintenance of seedlings. On harvest days, the bulk of the day is spent harvesting, cleaning and preparing vegetables for sale. The successful candidate needs to have strong work ethic and interest in local food systems. They must be able to do physical work as there is a lot of manual labour involved in this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Operation and maintenance of tools and equipment
• Bed preparation and planting
• Seeding, transplanting and fertilizing seedlings
• Cultivation and weeding
• Pest and disease management
• Harvesting, washing and packing of crops for CSA, farm stand and donation
• Maintenance of grounds and site infrastructure
• Assist with food box pickups and farm stand
Requirements/Qualifications
These are the qualifications that are necessary for someone to be considered for the position;
• Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
• Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
• Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
• Reliable and honest individual with strong work ethic;
• Ability to meet physical requirements of agricultural work – lift 50 lbs;
• Interest in food production and sustainability;
• Ability to work early mornings
Working Conditions
Mainly outside. May have to work in all weather conditions. Some work will be in the greenhouse or garage. We also have young children who will often be around the farm. A large dog also lives on the farm and will be around the employees.
Physical Requirements
This position is physically demanding at times. We ask that the interns be ready for the manual labour required of this position and must be able to lift 50 lbs.
