About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer
About the host employer
Pictou Landing First Nation is a small, Mi’kmaq community located along the Northumberland Strait about 20 minutes outside the Town of Trenton in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Fishing is the main industry and the community also has an elementary school, church, gas bar, Health Center and the Band Administration Office which administers core programs and services in Health, Education, Capital, Infrastructure, Housing, Economic Development and Employment/Training. Pictou Landing First Nation has an on-reserve population of over 500 members with Youth making up over 45%.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Pictou Landing First Nation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for helping our Coordinator with maintaining the community greenhouse, growing and caring for the plants. The successful candidate needs to have the ability to show up, be on time and work independently.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Install and maintain seasonal plants
- Weed and fertilize gardens when necessary
- Monitor and maintain the health of plants
- Deal with pest problems that could damage plants
- Keep gardens and green space clear of debris and litter
- Assist in workshops within the community
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Experience as a gardener;
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Knowledge of local pest and how to eliminate them;
- The ability to lift heavy items;
- Ability to remain on your feet for a long period of time;
- Love of the outdoors and plant life;
- Willing to work flexible hours when needed
