Wage: $17.00 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (9-week internship)

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

About the host employer

Glooscap First Nation is a Mi’kmaq community located in Nova Scotia with a strong mandate to advance community well-being through Indigenous-led governance, economic development, environmental stewardship, and social programming. The Nation delivers a range of programs and services supporting children, youth, families, and community members, including initiatives in health, education, culture, workforce development, and community engagement.

Glooscap First Nation has demonstrated capacity to host and supervise project staff through established administrative, financial, and governance structures. The organization regularly manages time-limited, externally funded projects and maintains policies and procedures that support accountability, reporting, and compliance with funding agreements. Staff work within multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with community partners, external organizations, and government stakeholders.

Summary of position

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Glooscap First Nation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for supporting the development and delivery of culturally grounded education and community learning initiatives focused on climate action, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development within Glooscap First Nation. The intern will help create learning materials, support youth programs and workshops, and assist with community outreach that reflects Mi’kmaq knowledge and values. A typical day may include preparing lesson materials, assisting with school or community programs, supporting land-based learning activities, helping coordinate events, and working with staff, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers on education initiatives. The successful candidate needs to have strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively with youth and community members, strong organization and time-management skills, basic computer proficiency, and a respectful, professional approach to working in an Indigenous community setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Education and Community Learning Support
    • Assist with the development and delivery of education, training, and community awareness initiatives focused on climate action, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development
    • Support culturally grounded learning activities that reflect Mi’kmaq knowledge, values, and relationships with the land and water
    • Assist with the creation of educational resources, learning materials, and program content for youth and community members
    • Support workshops, school programs, land-based learning, and community events
  • Program and Project Support
    • Support the planning, coordination, and implementation of education and outreach programs
    • Assist with program documentation, evaluation, and reporting
    • Support meetings, site visits, and community learning activities as required
    • Assist with the development of presentations, lesson materials, and learning tools
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement
    • Support community engagement activities related to education, environment, and sustainability
    • Assist with outreach, communications, and promotion of learning programs and events
    • Support coordination with schools, partners, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community organizations
  • Administrative and Operational Support
    • Perform general administrative duties including filing, data entry, record keeping, and document management
    • Assist with correspondence, reports, and internal communications
    • Support day-to-day operations of the Education and Community Programs team
  • General
    • Attend training, team meetings, and professional development sessions as required
    • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when handling sensitive information
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in education, environmental studies, community development, sustainability, communications, or a related field, with an interest in pursuing teaching or other forms of education as a career
  • Strong interest in youth programming, community learning, environmental stewardship, and climate action
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and multitasking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with youth, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members
  • Ability to support the development of engaging learning materials and educational programming
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Professional, respectful, and community-minded approach to work
  • Strong understanding of and respect for Mi’kmaq culture, knowledge systems, and values
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately

Working Conditions

  • Work takes place in an office-based, classroom-based, and community-based environment
  • Term position for nine (9) weeks during the summer
  • Standard office hours, with occasional evening or weekend events as required
  • Regular interaction with community members, youth, staff, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and partners
  • Exposure to confidential and sensitive information
  • Program-based work environment requiring professionalism, adaptability, and cultural awareness

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to participate in classroom, community-based, and land-based learning activities
  • Ability to assist with program setup, materials, and event coordination
  • Occasional lifting of program supplies or learning materials
  • Ability to travel locally for site visits and community activities
