About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
The Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Region (BLBR) is one of only 19 UNESCO Biospheres in Canada. The Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Region Association (BLBRA) with UNESCO involves local communities and all interested stakeholders in sustainable development of the terrestrial, marine and coastal ecosystem around the Bras d’Or Lake through community involvement and engagement.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Region Association. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for engaging with the public at various events to share knowledge about the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere in person and through digital and non-digital media. The successful candidate will have or be willing to develop skills in the areas of problem solving, adaptability, collaboration, communication, creativity, innovation and creating content for social media.
Duties and Responsibilities
The summer intern(s) will share knowledge of the Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere through engaging the public face to face as well as through social media and print.
Tasks will include:
- Attend BLBRA events to promote BLBRA and hand out information.
- Assist BLBRA’s partnership organizations with events.
- Co-create promotional materials for use in digital and non-digital spaces.
- Collect and summarize data on natural assets and other data collection activities.
- Summarize event metrics such as attendees and survey data.
- Participate in the development and delivery of educational materials and events supporting the environmental and sustainable development goals of the biosphere.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices in variable indoor and outdoor environments;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Be comfortable talking to people of all ages.
- Have a driver’s license and own means of transportation.
- Able to work on a few weekend day(s) in lieu of a weekday.
Working Conditions
The intern(s) will spend time in the office as well as outdoors attending various events throughout the Biosphere Region which surrounds the Bras d’Or Lake, Cape Breton Island.
Physical Requirements
There is a need to load, transport and unload teaching kits, promotional material and the like as well as banners and a collapsible kiosk tent when attending most events. Typically 20 lbs or less per item.
