About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
About the host employer
The Yarmouth County Solid Waste Management Authority (YCSWMA) is a Municipal entity that oversees the operation of the Yarmouth County Solid Waste Park (YCSWP). The YCWSP is a one stop facility for residents and businesses to deliver solid waste such as organics, recyclables, garbage, lighting, tires, electronics, household hazardous waste (HHW) such as paint and oils. It consists of a HHW depot, Transfer Station, Compost Facility and Construction and Demolition landfill and a Contaminated Soil Remediation Site. This park allows residents and businesses in Yarmouth County to divert as much waste as possible from disposal. It recently opened a reuse centre which has proven to be very successful and a complementary addition to the park. The YCSWP is located in South Ohio at 1932 Hardscratch Road in the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Yarmouth County Solid Waste Management Authority. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for promoting and managing the reuse centre at the YCSWP. The goal of the reuse centre is to divert as many usable items as possible from disposal. This project is helping to keep useful materials out of landfill while lowering our disposal numbers and helping us reach the Provincial 300kg disposal goal.
Currently, many things arrive at the waste park, not because they are at the end of their life cycle, but because people want to get rid of them. We are often approached by residents wishing to “salvage” materials from the park but we cannot allow them to do so for safety and liability concerns. There are other programs at the park that require additional support to manage such as E-Waste, HHW Depot, Rope and Plastic Recycling. A typical day in this position would involve being on site at the solid waste park and working at the public drop off or transfer station floor looking for items suitable for the reuse centre, setting up the reuse centre which opens each Saturday from April – October (weather dependant), and making sure each Saturday is booked with a community group to run the reuse centre. The park is planning to have a vegetable garden this year so assisting with this project as well. As time allows assist with sorting and preparing other materials for diversion through provincial or national programs. Create social media ads to promote the reuse centre and solid waste park. The successful candidate needs to have excellent organizational skills, self starter, good time management, ability to work with minimal supervision, computer and communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Find items for reuse centre
- Maintain and keep reuse centre organized
- Maintain data collected and diverted through reuse centre
- Book and meet with community group for running reuse centre each Saturday
- Oversee and schedule posts for Facebook page for YCSWP and reuse centre
- Plan for on site vegetable garden
- Assist with Rope and Recycling project
- Generate reports as required
- Educate public using facilities on where items go for proper disposal
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Excellent organizational and time management skills;
- Familiar with Microsoft Office computer system;
- Experience and ability to work flexible hours;
Working Conditions
The duties of this position will require working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and in a fast paced environment. Applicants will also be working with the public and should be aware that solid waste and handling garbage can be odorous and unpleasant at times. Wearing PPE is required while on site.
Physical Requirements
This position will require some light physical duties such as walking, standing, bending, lifting and carrying as regular daily activities.
