Job title: Village of St. Peter’s – Wastewater Efficiency Improvement Intern
Reports to: Operator of Direct Responsible Charge
Job location: 60 Denys Street, St. Peter’s(Main Office), 9428 Pepperell Street, St. Peter’s(Wastewater Treatment Plant), and manholes located throughout the Village
Wage: $17.00/hour
Hours: 35 hours per week (9-week internship)
Start Date: Expected June 25, 2026
About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
- From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
- Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Village of St. Peter’s. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for inspecting and documenting Village sewer collection system, specifically Infiltration and Inflow issues, and assisting staff come up with potential solutions, as well investigate solar energy options for the wastewater treatment plant. The successful candidate does not any specific skills to be considered for this position.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful intern for this project would be responsible for looking at Infiltration and Inflow (I and I) for the St. Peter’s Wastewater System. They would work closely with public staff members to check manholes on the Wastewater Treatment system, to determine if there is any leakage, as well mapping manholes throughout the system. They would assist staff in checking sump pumps to determine if there is discharge to sewer. The intern would be responsible for documenting the collection system to determine any infiltration locations that require repair. The intern would also be responsible for doing some educational outreach to the general public, i.e. information sheets on what to flush, and what not to flush into our sewer system. A secondary project would be investigating solar power options for the wastewater treatment plant.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
- Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
- Valid NS Driver’s License
- Basic computer knowledge in Microsoft Office 365
- An interest in wastewater treatment would be considered an asset, but not required
- Must complete WHIMS, OHS, Fire Safety courses as part of onboarding process once hired
- Must be in possession of steel toed boots, other safety equipment is provided by the employer.
Working Conditions
The successful intern candidate is required to spend time working outdoors, as they will be assisting with opening/closing manholes.
Physical Requirements
Job can be physically demanding, as successful candidate must be strong enough to assist the opening of manholes throughout the wastewater treatment system.
