About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

About the host employer

The Halifax Regional Food Hub is a nonprofit cooperative that aggregates and distributes locally produced food from farms across Nova Scotia to wholesale, institutional, and community buyers. Our primary office and warehouse are located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where we coordinate receiving, cold storage, and order distribution.

Summary of position

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Halifax Regional Food Hub. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for supporting operations of the Halifax Food Hub while increasing visibility of local food distribution through simple, consistent communications. A typical day includes receiving and organizing products from local producers, picking and packing orders for buyers, and maintaining a clean and organized warehouse. The intern will also capture photos and videos during daily operations and draft social media content that highlights producers, products, and the Food Hub’s activities. The successful candidate needs to be able to lift 50lb.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive, inspect, and organize incoming products from local producers, ensuring quality and proper storage (dry, refrigerated, and frozen)
  • Pick and pack orders accurately for wholesale buyers, and prepare orders for delivery or pickup
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe warehouse environment, including regular cleaning and basic upkeep
  • Assist with inventory tracking, stock rotation, and identifying low or excess inventory
  • Support coordination of incoming and outgoing shipments, including staging orders for delivery
  • Capture photos and videos during daily operations, including product arrivals, packing, and producer highlights
  • Draft and schedule simple social media posts to promote products, producers, and Food Hub activities
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a basic communications plan
  • Support continuous improvement of warehouse workflows and operational efficiency
  • Perform other related duties as needed to support Food Hub operations.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team in a fast-paced environment
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions and procedures
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with social media platforms and google suite
  • Comfortable taking photos and videos and drafting simple written content
  • Interest in local food systems, sustainability, or community-based work
  • Willingness to learn warehouse operations, inventory systems, and food handling practices

Working Conditions

This job requires the participant to work in a warehouse and be standing for extended periods.

Physical Requirements

This job is physically demanding at times, there are extended periods of standing and lifting products. Should be able to lift 50lb.
