Job Description – Clean Leadership 2026 Program 

Job title: Jr. Grower  

Reports to: Nursery Lead. Mentoring opportunities through Operations Manager and General Manager as available.  

Job location: 2267 Antigonish Guysborough Rd. St. Andrews, NS, B0H 1X0 

Wage: $18.00 / hour

Hours: 35 hours per week (15-week internship) 

 Start Date: Expected May 11, 2026

About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.  

Program Requirements 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;  
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship; 
  • From and/or residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship; 
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer

About the host employer 

Scott and Stewart Forestry Consultants (SSF) is a fully integrated forest service provider. SSF prides itself on its long term land management strategy of increasing forest yields for private, public, and industrial lands in Nova Scotia. We pick seed, grow trees, plant trees, tend stads, commercially thin, final felling, and have an extensive vegetation management team working across Atlantic Canada.  

This position will be hosted at our nursery in St. Andrews, Nova Scotia.  

Summary of position  

In this position, you will be mainly responsible for supporting the seed picking, cleaning, storing, stratification, transplanting, and tending of seedlings at our nursery site. At the end of the internship we would be looking to product a training manual for the processes in our nursery in the propagation of various tree species. You will also be collecting and analyzing growth data of various crops and assisting the growing team in various parts of the growing process (transplanting, thinning, watering, applying fertilizers and monitoring). The successful candidate needs to have an interest in working in a team environment, interest in growing native Nova Scotia plant species, and a curiosity about improving and developing systems for improvement.  

Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Organize and direct greenhouse and nursery operations under the direction of the Sr. Nursery Grower 
  • Establish, initiate, and track workplans under direction of the Sr. Nursery Grower 
  • Supervise staff while tending to crops under management of Jr. Nursery Grower including, seeding, planting, transplanting, fertilizing, and spraying 
  • Identify and report insect, disease and weed problems. Implement control strategies with Sr. Nursery Grower and Integrated Pest Management System 
  • Responsible for 1 or more crops as directed by the Sr. Grower 
  • Seeding, Weeing, Transplanting Trees 
  • Moving, and Grading trees and plants 
  • Water and Fertigate plants 
  • Mix and prepare growing mediums 
  • Maintain a Clean Workstation and Environment 
  • Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions 

Requirements/Qualifications 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment; 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback; 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset; 
  • Enrolled in a University Degree in horticulture/agriculture/Environmental Sciences, or Enrolled in a Diploma in Plant Biology, Horticulture, or relevant experience in an agriculture environment is considered an asset 
  • Valid class 5 drivers license

Working Conditions  

This position requires the employee to work inside greenhouses and outdoors in all weather conditions.  

Physical Requirements  

This job will require the candidate to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Employees are expected to lift and carry up to 35lbs.
