About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Program

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.

Program Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 years old (inclusive) at the start of internship;
  • From and/or will be residing in Nova Scotia for the duration of the internship;
  • Must not be an immediate family member of host employer;

About the host employer

The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) is a coalition of individuals, organizations and institutions working in the Atlantic region to build and model just, equitable and sustainable communities, locally and globally. ACIC connects leadership across generations by strengthening members and partners, bridging dialogue and building networking and learning opportunities. ACIC also represents and amplifies the voice of Atlantic Canada and connects the Atlantic with other provincial, national and international stakeholders. The ACIC office is based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, Nova Scotia. The majority of ACIC staff are currently based in Nova Scotia, with provincial coordinators based in Charlottetown, PEI, and Fredericton, New Brunswick, respectively.

Summary of position 

The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for supporting ACIC youth Photovoice program participants to create public engagement materials about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The successful candidate needs to be motivated with strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a small team.

Duties and Responsibilities 

The SDG Engagement intern will support ACIC’s work in showcasing how the SDGs are being addressed in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. The SDG Engagement intern, working with ACIC program staff, will support ACIC’s Photovoice youth participants to create photo essays capturing impressions of the Sustainable Development Goals in their communities. The intern will co-design and deliver workshop with program participants and provide support as they create their photo essays.

The intern will also create communications materials (blog series, social media content, infographics) to showcase the work being done to promote and achieve the SDGs in Nova Scotia and the Atlantic region. These materials will be used to increase engagement and awareness of the SDGs in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • In partnership with ACIC program staff, co-design and deliver a workshop for youth participants of ACIC’s Photovoice program;
  • Meet in small groups with program participants to support their design of their photovoice projects;
  • Create a blog series for ACIC’s website, including text, photos, and infographics;
  • Create schedule of social media posts across multiple platforms;
  • Attend and support logistical coordination of ACIC networking events as required;
  • Update websites as required.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience using social media and web platforms;
  • Experience creating promotional materials with Canva, MS Publisher, or other platforms;
  • Some small-group facilitation skills an asset, but not required;
  • Knowledge of non-government organizations (NGO) international development and community groups in the Atlantic an asset;
  • Experience conducting interviews an asset;
  • Bilingual in English and French an asset.

Working Conditions 
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required, with advance notice provided.
