About the host employer
Waste Check is a not for profit organization also known as the Western Region Solid Waste-Resource Management Authority (Region 7). The office location is in Yarmouth, but we represent the 6 Municipal Units of Yarmouth and Digby Counties. Waste Check provides waste reduction awareness, education, and program support to motivate everyone in the Western Region to reduce waste for a healthy environment. We administer the education, enforcement and waste reduction programs in the region. We currently have 7 full time employees who assist with these programs and educate the residents and businesses of the Region so they can comply with the regional and provincial waste management programs.
Summary of position
The host employer for this Summer Internship position through the Clean Leadership program will be Waste Check. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for conducting a residential curbside outreach education program through the use of curbside monitoring with visual audits. With recent changes to our recycling program in December 2025, new items were added through extended producer responsibility (EPR) for packaging, paper products and packaging-like products (PPP) for Nova Scotia so an increase in education and awareness is necessary.
