About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Programย
The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9- and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorship opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.
Program Requirementsย
- Must be a Canadian citizen,ย Permanent Resident,ย person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work inย Canada;ย ย
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 yearsย old (inclusive)ย atย the startย ofย internship;ย
- From and/or will beย residingย in Nova Scotia for the duration of theย internship;ย
- Must not be an immediate family member ofย hostย employer.
About the host employerย
West Hants Regional Municipality is a centrally located and growing collection of communities serving approximatelyย 20,000 residentsย in both rural and urban areas. Urban areas are served by municipal water and/or sewer utilities. West Hants Regional Municipality is a local government that provides public services for our residents consisting of road maintenance, utility services, waste management, emergency management, infrastructure, and land-use planning. Central municipal administration isย locatedย out of 76 Morison Dr, Windsor, where the intern willย be working from.
Summary ofย positionย ย
The host employer for thisย Summer Internship positionย through the Clean Leadership program will beย West Hants Regional Municipality.ย In this position, you will beย mainly responsibleย forย supporting the Climate Action Coordinator in the delivery and ongoing development of the Switch West Hants Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program. The primary goal of this position is to assist municipal staff with program administration, data management, and reporting that support effective, accountable, and scalable delivery of the program, among other projects and tasks. This will support expansion of this program to include financing of climate change adaptation upgrades. A typical day in this role may include organizing and entering program data, correspondence, planning program outreach and marketing, reviewing and updating tracking spreadsheets, assisting with internal reporting, and supporting background research related to energy efficiency or climate resilience measures. The intern will work primarily in an office setting, collaborating with municipal staff and receiving guidance, mentorship, and regular feedback.
This role does not require technical experience. However, the successful candidate must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, basic computerย proficiencyย (e.g., Microsoftย Office Suiteย or similar tools), and the ability to communicate clearly, both verbally andย in writing. An interest in environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, or climate action is essential, along with a willingness to learn and work collaboratively in a municipal environment.
Duties and Responsibilitiesย ย
- Support the administration of the Switch West Hantsย PACE Program, includingย assisting withย tracking applications, approvals, and program progress
- Enter, organize, andย maintainย program-related data in spreadsheets or databases
- Assistย with basic data review and preparation of internal summaries or reports
- Support background research related to energy efficiency initiatives and climate resilience measures
- Assistย with the development and maintenance of internal templates, tracking tools, or documentation
- Support the creation of social mediaย contentย and public engagement.
- Participate in meetings or check-ins with municipal staff as appropriate
- Communicate professionally with staff and follow established municipal procedures
- Support the planning and delivery of public engagement activities, including consultations, meetings, and community events
- Support other related environmental or energy program tasks as needed
- Any other tasks as deemed necessary
Requirements/Qualificationsย
- Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment
- Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of aย college, diploma orย post-secondary program in environmental studies, sustainability,ย engineering, asset management,ย planning, public policy, data analysis, or a related field
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Basic computerย proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Officeย Suiteย or similar tools
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with guidance and supervision
- Clearย verbal andย written communication skills and the ability to prepare simple summaries or detailed reports
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional office environmentย while responding to feedback
- Willingness to learn and follow established municipal procedures and confidentiality requirements
- Demonstrated creative thinking and problem-solving skills would be considered an asset
- Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered an asset
Working Conditionsย
The intern will have the opportunity to work with the public via attending Switch West Hants homeowner information sessions, both virtual and in person.
