About the Clean Leadership Summer Internship Programย 

The Clean Leadership Summer Internship program helps grow the clean economy by matching interns (age 15-30) with employers for 9-ย and 15-week summer work placements. Participating interns will receive paid hands-on experience, mentorshipย opportunities, take part in a professional development conference and training, while supporting local environmental projects.ย ย 

Program Requirementsย 

  • Must be a Canadian citizen,ย Permanent Resident,ย person who has been granted refugee status in Canada or legally entitled to work inย Canada;ย ย 
  • Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 yearsย old (inclusive)ย atย the startย ofย internship;ย 
  • From and/or will beย residingย in Nova Scotia for the duration of theย internship;ย 
  • Must not be an immediate family member ofย hostย employer;ย 

About the host employerย 

ShanDaphย Aquaculture is an environmentally sustainable, organic aquaculture operation,ย locatedย in Big Island, Nova Scotia.ย 

The boutique operation grows primarily oysters, as well as bay scallops and quahogs, in theย 

Northumberland Strait waters of Atlantic Canada.ย ShanDaphย Oysters focuses on providingย 

consistently high quality, fresh shellfish. Only the plumpest, tastiest shellfish with consistent sizeย and shape are harvested for an exciting gourmet experience.ย 

ShandDaphย promotes environmentally sound practices. Shellfish are grown from seed andย 

harvested in a natural setting. They are packaged onsite in aย Federally-registered, solar-poweredย facility, the only one in Atlantic Canada.ย 

Summary ofย positionย ย 

We are looking for an enthusiastic, responsible, and hard-working individual to fill the positionย 

of Shellfish Farm Technician. The position will entail full time hours working on site, at one ofย 

our two aquaculture leases, working within our federally registered shellfish processing facility,ย 

reporting on and measuring the effectiveness ofย new technologiesย and processes forย aย shellfishย 

husbandry.ย 

Duties and Responsibilitiesย ย 

  • 1. This position will entail a keen willingness to be outdoors, on the water,ย 

and involved in all aspects of shellfish husbandry,ย harvestingย andย processing;ย 

  • 2. The incumbent willย be requiredย to swim for shellfish, harvest from aย 

boat, de-foul shellfish, sort,ย tumblingย and gradingย oysters;ย 

  • 3. The husbandryย componentย involves managing various shellfish growย 

out apparatus andย determiningย best husbandry practice forย optimalย growth;ย 

  • 4. The position willย assistย in measuring the effectiveness of newย 

technologies for shellfish husbandry, including data collection and qualitativeย 

research andย reporting;ย 

  • 5. Data collection for various environmental monitoring for temperature,ย 

salinity measurements,ย turbidity;ย 

  • 6. The incumbent, based on skill set willย be requiredย to design and repairย 

husbandry and growth equipment asย required;ย 

  • 7. A willingness to adjust weekly work hours based on the tides andย 

activities being carried out on the farm.ย 

Requirements/Qualificationsย 

  • Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy workย environment;ย 
  • Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding toย feedback;ย 
  • Demonstrated interest in future employment in the environmental or clean sector is considered anย asset;ย 
  • Student in the field of Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental engineering,ย Environmental Resourceย Managementย or other such field.ย 
  • The ability to be outdoors in a wet environment, for most of the day.ย 
  • A Nova Scotia boating license.ย 
  • First aid certificate (long course).ย 
  • An independent worker who can autonomously complete tasks.ย 
  • Technical capacity and experience in design, prototyping and build out newย equipment. CAD experience at asset.ย

Working Conditionsย ย 

Fast-paced environment, physically demanding, working outdoors most of the dayย 

Big Island, Nova Scotia at our Shellfish Aquaculture siteย 

We can help find accommodations for students who require it. We have a trailer on site that can accommodate 1 student. We are 35 minutes from Antigonish and New Glasgow. 2 hours fromย 

Halifax. A car isย almost aย necessity in this rural location.ย
